Early life
Kemi Afolabi was born on the 28th of April in Lagos although her parents hail from Ogun State. She’s the first of three kids with two younger brothers.
Education
Sh had her primary education at Tunwashe Nursery and Primary School, Ikeja. Afolabi attended A-Z International School and Our Lady of Apostles School before proceeding to the University of Lagos where she bagged a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
Career
In her final year at the University, students of the Creative Arts Department invited her to participation in a theatre production which she obliged.
Her first movie in Nollywood Yoruba was Alagba. The actress got married in 2008 and was with her husband before returning in 2013.
Controversy
Recently, it was reported that Afolabi had a clash with Seyi Ariyo popularly called She Baby over some clothes.
According to the report, it was revealed that Afolabi had borrowed clothes from She Baby which she failed to return.
On the other hand, Afolabi had disclosed the She baby had refused to pay for her hotel accommodation when she was on the location of her movie and she had held on to the clothes in her car which was that of She Baby.
Awards
The actress received the award for Best Yoruba Actress of the Year at City People Awards and the Most Prominent Actress award at the Odua Image Awards in 2016.
Also, she won the award for Best Yoruba Movie producer of the year at the City People Awards.
Marriage
Afolabi is married to Wale Adesipe who lives in the United Kingdom. He is building engineering and a contractor. Wale is also a graduate of the University of Bedfordshire in Luton England. The couple met through a mutual friend at a wedding ceremony in Ibadan.
They have a daughter together, Darasimi Adesipe.
Personal life
According to Afolabi, despite her status as a celebrity and the lack of privacy, she revealed that she’s a very simple person.
She also disclosed that her life is quite straightforward as a result people have come to see her as a very frank person.
The actress revealed that she hates liars and people that live fake lives
In an interview, the actress also disclosed that she no longer had male admirers because she was married with a kid. Although, she disclosed that there are still men that persist despite knowing her status as a married woman and mother.
Movie project
Afolabi recently featured in a movie project, Mo’dorisha which addresses the issues of domestic violence, rape and other issues affecting the female gender.
The actress revealed that her husband has provided her with the much needed leadership and support structure for her as an actress. As a result, marriage hasn’t slowed down her career as an actress.
Fashion
The actress revealed that she loves quality wristwatches, hand bag and shoes.
According to Afolabi, she’s a designer freak particularly Gucci products a lot.
Hobbies
When she’s not acting, she loves her maximizing her family time by cooking for her family.
The actress also revealed that she loves to watch movies including those she features in so that she can criticize and see how things could have been done better.
It also seems Afolabi is great dancer and she was spotted at the birthday party of Aigbe’s son, Juwon twerking and having fun.
Altercation with Area Boys
Recently, a video was circulated online in which a supposed area boy, Shittu Waheed Olawale revealed that Kemi Afolabi and her crew had injured him.
But Afolabi’s camp claimed that it was Olawale that attacked and injured them, while they were shooting a movie at a location in the Ikorodu area of Lagos. It was also reported that the actress lost her pregnancy due to the incident.
The supposed area boy stated his own side of the story by revealing that the crew had parked their vehicle in front of his shop and placed their equipments in his shop without his permission.
He revealed that he confronted them but the camera man accused him of being a street urchin that was just out to extort them. This argument subsequently broke out into a fight and according to Olawale, he was beaten up by the film crew and had to run for his life at a point.
Fans
As it is with most celebrities, there are time fans are screaming your praise, while other times, you’re being vilified.
A few years ago, the actress posted a picture in which she was wearing some makeup which her fans had reacted to and tagged as excessive.
On another occasion, the actress responded to the plea of a fan that needed six thousand naira to sort out her father’s medical condition and this action was commended by her fans.
Father-in-law’s burial
In 2017, Afolabi’s father in law died and she had to travel with her husband to Ilesha for the burial.
She was accompanied by some of her friends in the industry like Odunlade Adekola, Fathia Balogun, Mercy Aigbe and Mide Funmi-Martins
Odunlade Adekola
There have been rumours of a relationship between Afolabi and the popular actor, Odunlade Adekola. In fact, another actress, Seyi Ariyo claimed that it is a well known fact in the movie industry that Odunlade is dating Kemi Afolabi.
The actor has since responded in an interview where he slammed the actress for dragging his name in mud. He revealed that he wanted to sue for defamation of character but he decided against.
Odunlade is quite popular in Nollywood Yoruba. Before he began his movie career, he used to act in the Christ Apostolic Church which he attended with one of his childhood friends.
Adekola made his film debut when he featured in Faworaja and Asiri Gomina. But it was the later that shot him to prominence and open doors for him.
In recent times, Odunlade has starred in movies like Taxi Driver (Oko Ashawo), Wives on Strike and New Money. He is quite known for his versatility and he is arguably the best actor in the Yoruba movie genre.
